The lineage of the Ariel VB dates back even longer than the Red Hunter OHV models, the model A and B of 1926 being the start of it all, although the VB had the same bore and stroke dimensions of the 4hp model produced way back in 1910.
Both overhead-valve and side-valve versions were made, the latter continuing in Ariel’s post-war line-up as the 600cc VB. Aimed almost exclusively at the sidecar market, the big single proved popular with families of limited means as a motorcycle combination was still available at half the price of a small car with much lower running costs.
Subject to a process of regular improvement, the VB gained an alloy cylinder head for better cooling from 1955 and a swinging arm suspension was also specified for the same year. The fitment of this alloy head increased compression from 5:1 to a heady 6:1, giving a rise in power of 1.7bhp to 17bhp at 4,000rpm. Top speed with a sidecar attached was in the region of 55mph with fuel consumption of 55mpg.
First registered in June 1958, this VB is still coupled to a family-size sidecar, old tax discs on file showing that it was in regular use until at least 1979, although what it got up to from that date until being acquired by the Stondon Museum in 1997 is uncertain. It appears to be in good order and looks correct for its year, the sidecar being of the same period as the motorcycle and perhaps the original fitment.
The V5C is present and it still retains its original, distinctive NAN number plate with nothing in the notes column to say that this number is not transferable. So if you are looking for a present for granny, this could well be it, although we would advise the usual precautionary checks before you let her loose on the road.
