The word 'Flagship' can be used by any motor manufacturer with a range of models; but when Mercedes-Benz use the term it means more than most.

The all-conquering flagship S Class saloons have remained at the top of the tree for many years, managing to sell in high volume, yet retaining extraordinary quality and sophistication. The CL500 you see here is based on that superb S Class platform, the W215 models being produced from 2000 until 2006.

Using the best technology from its four-door sibling, the svelte two-door coupe carried over the stunning active suspension system, which links to the steering and braking systems, pumping oil to a series of rams in the suspension at nearly 3,000psi, delivering super flat cornering and immense stability.

The magnificent 5-litre V8 put 302bhp and a mighty 339lb/ft at the driver’s disposal, launching the luxury Coupe to 60mph in just 6.1 seconds with a top speed limited to 155mph. Costing over £60,000 new, ownership was limited to a privileged few.

First registered in September 2001, this CL500 has had just four owners from new, the third keeping it from June 2005 to March 2014, and has covered only 70,800 miles with a partial service history comprising 4 stamps up to 49,475 miles in 2005. Fully loaded with all the luxuries you would expect such as heated leather seats, built-in sat nav and parking sensors, the car is said to be in very smart condition throughout with shiny silver paintwork and a black leather interior.

Mainly kept in storage for the last couple of years, we are told that the car drives very well but the engine management light is on, a relatively common fault with Mercs from this era and which is often due to a fairly trivial cause as a Google search will reveal (although no guarantees are issued in this case).

Due to have a fresh MOT in time for the sale, this fast and sybaritcally luxurious machine looks absurdly good value at the modest guide price suggested and will have the neighbours thinking that you have won the lottery when they see it on your drive.
