Unveiled in 1968, the TR6 became the best-selling Triumph in history by the time production ended in 1976, more than 94,000 being sold, over 90% of them to US specifications.

Essentially a cleverly updated TR5, it had more aggressive and angular bodywork penned not by the TR5’s Italian designer, Michelotti, but by the team at Karmann in Germany. In the US, it featured the 111bhp six-cylinder engine that was carried over from the TR250, while the UK version had a more powerful 150bhp engine from the TR5 that included the Lucas mechanical fuel injection system, although from 1973 it was detuned to 125bhp to meet stricter emissions regulations.

Refined for a sportscar, it featured deep-pile carpet on floors and boot, plush-looking bucket seats, a lovely wooden dashboard and a full complement of instrumentation. In 150bhp form, it could hit 60mph in just 8.5 seconds with a top speed of 120mph.

This 1970 model was purchased for the vendor’s wife last year (we’ve heard that before!). Bills on file show that in 1996 it had new sills and inner wings, work undertaken by the mobile ‘car doctor’ costing £3,486 plus £2,300 for a respray. In 2006 it had further significant work, a raft of invoices from the TR shop showing the extensive list of parts that were used. A particularly well-fitting new hood was fitted by Don Trimming in 2011 costing £697 complete with zip-out rear window.

There are ten old MOTs on file, the oldest of which dates from 1990 at which time the odometer read 55,772 miles. It now shows 67,078 miles, although there is insufficient documentation to substantiate this as the correct total from new.

Only on the market because of the wife’s lack of enthusiasm for open top motoring, it is ready for immediate use and given the recent rapid rise in TR prices looks good value at the suggested guide price.
