The Peugeot 205 needs little introduction to any car enthusiast with a production run spanning 13 years and a huge reputation that includes saving Peugeot’s very existence.

Known for making solid if rather ponderous saloons through the Sixties and Seventies, in 1983 Peugeot came alive with the neat little hatchback devised by their in-house designer, Gerard Welter. Initially available with small economical engines, the design used MacPherson struts at the front with torsion bar rear suspension which gave excellent ride and handling.

Unfairly (given what we know in hindsight of it’s awesome reputation) the 205 lost out to the Fiat Uno in the 1983 ‘European Car of the Year’ awards but this didn't stop the punters flocking to the showrooms. Peugeot missed no opportunity to expand the 205 range and models included both three- and five-door cars, petrol or diesel, GTi, Cabriolet and Van versions, even a Group B rally monster, all available in every trim level you could imagine from poverty spec to full Roland Garros luxury.

Top of the tree for the go-getting Eighties ‘Young Upwardly mobile Professional’ was the raffish 205 CTi, basically a GTi without a roof, so all the world could appreciate the driver and his passengers while the legendary handling dealt with the serious business of keeping them on the road. Never ones to miss a trick, Peugeot also introduced a version in 1986 with a smaller 1,400cc engine, softer more comfortable suspension and jolly graphics, the 205 CJ.

First registered in April 1991, this highly original 205 CJ was bought new by a lady who used the Cabriolet as a runabout on the sunny island of Jersey. She kept the car until 2000 when ownership transferred to her father, an Army Captain in Ross-on-Wye, who sold it to the vendor in 2008. A motor trader at the time, he initially registered the car in his company name but put it into his own name when he changed career and susequently gave it to his son so the V5 records five keepers in all.

Resplendent in white with purple side mouldings, it comes with an extensive service history and is warranted to have covered just 19,600 miles with various old MOTs and invoices to substantiate this.

Little used in recent years, the CJ has just had a thorough recommissioning after emerging from a period in storage. This included an engine service and a thoroughly overhauled brake system with new discs, pads and brake pipes. New wheel bearings and a new battery were also fitted, the neat 205 GTi 1.6 wheels refurbished and new tyres fitted to the front wheels.

MOTd until April 2016 and with just two family owners from new, this super low mileage Cabriolet shouts fun, fun, fun and is just the ticket for the long hot summer that undoubtedly lies ahead of us.
