MG Midget 1500

The final incarnation of the long-running MG Midget started life as an updated version of the Donald Healey inspired Austin-Healey ‘Frogeye’ Sprite.

Growing more comfortable and civilised as the years passed by, the Midget 1500 ended up with the 1,491cc engine from the Triumph Spitfire, wind up windows, external door handles, servo brakes and of course the rubber bumpers that so characterised these last of the line models.

Midget by name but far from nature, it was a nimble performer, eventually disappearing from MG’s line-up in 1980 by which time a colossal 266,000 had been delivered, 20% of these in its final 1500 form.

This 1980 model comes from the final year of production and must have had an interesting start in life. Its first MOT from 1983 shows that it had covered just 71 miles, a further 20 old MOTs showing the gradual increase in mileage over the ensuing years. The odometer still reads under 35,000 miles, a sales invoice from 1990, when it sold for £3,000, giving an indicated mileage of 29,728 at this time.

Purchased a number of years ago by the vendor for his daughter to use, she never really took the car to heart and it has covered very little distance since then.

Due to have a fresh MOT by the time of sale, it retains an original hand book and assorted bills dating from 2012.

Interest in these late-model Midgets has risen noticeably over the last year or so, no doubt reflecting their lively performance and ease of ownership. This smart, low mileage example is looking for a new home that will appreciate it for what it is.
