Launched in 1971, the new W107 series SL had a tough act to follow, the delicate “Pagoda” SL that it replaced having set the benchmark for good manners, quality, refinement and practicality.

Offered in a wide range of engine sizes from 2.8-litre sixes to 5-litre V8s, it was to remain in production until 1989 with over 300,000 having left the works before the new and significantly more complex W129 series made its debut.

Although the 280 was the baby of the SL range, it boasted an excellent blend of performance and economy. Far more economical to run that its V8 siblings, its smooth straight-six fuel injected engine produced 182bhp and 176lb/ft of torque, enough to top 125mph and dash to 60mph from standstill in under 10 seconds.

This 1985 example has been with the same family since 1994. An old MOT shows that it had covered 75,000 miles when acquired, the odometer having now just passed the 133,000 mile mark, an average of just 3,000 miles per year in their ownership.

The file includes a number of bills, along with 17 old MOTs, several insurance valuations and a handbook. Its hardtop is painted in a contrasting brown colour and the car ran very nicely when travelling through its native Cardiff to take the photographs. The hood appears to have been replaced in the not too distant past and the car is MOTd until June 2015.

This well presented SL left the factory at the zenith of Mercedes-Benz quality, a feature which becomes immediately obvious as soon as you open the door. With many SLs being advertised at almost twice the suggested guide price, it looks a very tempting prospect in which to enjoy the excellent weather we've been having of late.
