"Of all the cars we have occasion to drive, there is one above all others which, by its every characteristic, clearly defines the term sportscar." As this Road & Track verdict on the 1954 MG TF shows, virtually every MG produced falls into the category of instant classic.

Last of the MG T-series line and arguably the best, the TF was introduced in October 1953. Although mechanically very similar to its TD predecessor, the provision of a shorter radiator, revised wing line and faired-in headlamps lent it an altogether sportier air. Equipped with rack-and-pinion-steering, independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension and effective four-wheel drum brakes, the new model helped maintain the marque's 'Safety Fast' reputation.

Powered by a 58bhp twin-carb 1,250cc XPAG four-cylinder engine, the TF could crack 60mph in around 18 seconds with a top speed of 80mph. From November 1954 onwards it was also available with a 63bhp 1466cc XPEG engine. Just 9,600 TF models were made before it was replaced by the entirely different MGA in 1955, the vast majority being sold in LHD form to the American market.

This very attractive TF 1250 was UK registered from new wearing the number PLV 209 in April 1954. The subject of an older restoration, its previous Irish owner purchased the car in 2003 in fine fettle, showing 49,000 miles on the clock which at the time was believed to be correct, although there is insufficient documentary evidence to substantiate this. There are however 25 old MOTs on file which cover the period 1972 – 2002, an MOT test no longer being mandatory in Ireland where it has resided since then.

This smart Almond Green Metallic example has undertaken numerous overseas trips, including France and the UK and comes with its original buff logbook and a CD showing the restoration of its engine and bodywork. A bill from Brown and Gammons dating from 2003 amounts to £5,439, with a further bill for £4,968 covering the fitting of a modern 5-speed gearbox (with overdrive 5th), modern lip seals to the front and rear of the crankshaft, new carburettors, an electric fuel pump, electronic ignition and a stainless steel exhaust. Thankfully the original gearbox is included in the sale should the buyer choose to return the car to standard specification along with a box of useful spare parts.

To improve safety and make the car more usable, the previous owner added discrete indicators and a high level brake light, carefully mounted on the rear luggage carrier. New carpets, hood and a tonneau cover were added in 2006 along with a recent set of replacement chrome wire wheels to keep the car looking 'just so'.

The mileage now stands at 63,000 miles, the car being described by the vendor as very attractive indeed. With its modern suspension, steering and brakes, the TF makes for an excellent combination of those gorgeous traditional MG looks with performance and handling well able to compete with the traffic of today, especially given the sensible modifications fitted to this particular example.
