Incredibly strong, smooth and comfortable, the Rover P4 is one of the best made cars ever to be mass produced on these shores.

In production from 1949 until 1964, it came in a bewildering number of versions but all were excellent cars, furnished to a very high standard with plenty of wood and leather, that were enormously popular with the middle class motorist.

This particular car is a Rover 80, launched in 1960 at a list price of £1,396 including taxes, and remaining in production for only two years. Fitted with an 80bhp 2,286cc Land-Rover based OHV 4-cylinder engine, it was good for an easy 80mph and 27mpg, delivered with surprising smoothness. Overdrive came as standard, as did servo front disc brakes, wider wheel rims and lightweight aluminium doors, boot and bonnet. Just 5,900 were made before it was replaced by the six-cylinder 95 and 110 models in 1962.

First registered in Glamorgan in 1961, this car is in superb original condition throughout and has covered a mere 22,300 miles from new. The red leather interior is in outstanding condition with that lovely patina that can never be replicated in a restored car and only comes with decades of careful use.

Complete with virtually every old MOT back to 1967 to verify the low mileage, it also retains its original owners' handbook, complete original toolkit and original buff log book. Recently fitted with new tyres all round, it is said to drive beautifully and will be sold with a full 12 months’ MOT.

The vendor believes that you would be hard pressed to find a better example anywhere and, having seen the car, we are inclined to agree with him.

Catalogue amendment; Bidders are advised that the car has covered 22,900 miles and not 22,300 as catalogued
