“It can commute Monday to Friday but sprint race at the weekend. Take it on a long journey and it won’t dislodge your fillings. And a visit to the dealer between services is rarer than a frog with feathers. The Boxster is the nearest thing we have to sports car perfection.”

This report from Jason Dawes in the Sunday Times is typical of the rapturous reception which greeted the Porsche Boxster at its launch in 1996. Fast but not ferocious, beautifully built and with superb handling thanks to its mid-mounted engine, it had none of the vices for which earlier 911s were notorious.

Early versions had a 2.5-litre flat-six engine but this was soon replaced by a more powerful 2.7-litre unit, a top-of-the-range 3.2-litre Boxster S version being available from 2000. Producing 255bhp, it could launch the S to 60mph in just 5.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 162mph.

Beautifully balanced with near perfect weight distribution and superb brakes, it was safe enough for your mother-in-law to drive, but quick enough to enthrall even the most sporting driver. Strictly a two-seater, it also had a fabulous electric soft top that could be raised or lowered in a record-breaking 12 seconds.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the legendary 550 Spyder, in 2004 Porsche launched an even better version of the Boxster S with a revised engine boasting an extra 6bhp and marginally more torque; a short-shift gear-change; part stainless steel sports exhaust; uprated brakes and suspension; bigger 18” wheels (up from 17”) with spacers to widen the stance; Litronic self-cleaning headlamps; automatic air conditioning; premium sound system; wind deflector; stability control plus a host of minor trim revisions both outside and inside the car. Just 1,953 were produced in total (the year the 550 was announced) of which only 155 were in right-hand drive.

First registered in May 2004, this is one of those rare RHD models and is number 1230 of the run, as shown by a plaque on the centre console. It has covered around 99,500 miles to date with a comprehensive service history comprising 8 stamps in the book, the last less than 1,000 miles ago in February this year.

Finished in classic Porsche silver with a black leather interior and a 6-speed manual gearbox, it is said to be in very good condition throughout and to drive beautifully. It comes with an MOT until February 2016 (the only advisories being worn front brake discs and brake pipes), plus three keys. Any Boxster is sensational to drive and this well-maintained limited edition looks a snip at the modest guide price suggested.

Catalogue Amendment: Some issue when selecting second gear when cold.
