Anyone who reads performance car magazines will have long since learned an undeniable truth – for sheer technical excellence, driving thrills and day-to-day reliability, there is no finer sportscar on the planet than the Porsche 911.

Every year, with ruthless regularity, it trounces all other marques for whichever ‘Sportscar Of The Year’ group test it is entered into, the judges always saying they just can’t imagine how it can be improved – until the next 911 comes along and proves to be better still. Continuously developed since 1963, it is the epitome of Teutonic engineering excellence and delivers a seat-of-the-pants driving experience that, once savoured and mastered, makes every other car feel weak and flabby by comparison.

The 997 generation that ran from 2005 to 2012 was typical of the breed, being faster, lighter and more fuel efficient than its already crushingly capable 996 predecessor. The base model was powered by a 3.6-litre water-cooled flat-six that produced 321bhp and 273lb/ft but an even more powerful S version was available with a 3.8-litre engine that produced 355bhp and 295lb/ft with a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 188mph. In 2008 the Gen 2 3.8 models became more powerful still with 385bhp and 306lb/ft plus better brakes and suspension. All were toweringly capable machines that could lap the Nurburgring in 8 minutes or less – the threshold for entry to the supercar club.

First registered in March 2005, this Carrera 2S 3.8 has effectively had just two owners from new, the first keeping it right up until earlier this year although, for reasons best known to himself, it was twice transferred into another person’s name so the V5 records three former keepers although all the service bills are addressed to one owner. The vendor acquired the car from Sytner Select of Leicester in February 2015 in order to fulfil a lifelong ambition to own a 911, the car going through the full pre-sale approval process in the Sytner workshops before being issued with a six-month warranty valid until August (but only transferable if sold privately, not by auction).

The car has covered just over 79,000 miles with seven services to date, the last when acquired from Sytner’s about 1,000 miles ago. In March 2010 at 43,985 miles the car was fitted with a new 3.8 engine under extended Porsche warranty at a cost of over £7,000 (invoice on file) so the engine itself has only done around 35,000 miles (the true cost of a new engine is about twice that amount but Porsche usually foot around half the bill on cars over 5 years old because there was a known failure affecting some of the early engines caused by a defect in the boring of certain cylinders during the production process). The vendor was told that the new engine fitted is the later Gen 2 unit but neither he nor we have been able to substantiate this.

Silver with a blue leather interior, the car comes with the 6-speed manual gearbox (that all proper Porsche drivers prefer) and has various options fitted including built-in sat nav and parking sensors. Said to be in excellent condition throughout and to drive beautifully with an MOT until January 2016, the car is only for sale because the vendor finds that it is just too fast for him and it frightens the wits out of his wife who fears not only for his licence but also for his life! Having realised his lifelong dream he can now say ‘been there, done that’ and happily downsize to a less powerful machine with licence and limbs intact.

There is no question that these are seriously potent machines (whether in stock 355bhp or Gen 2 385bhp spec) and are for experienced drivers only. If the prospect of having one in your garage fills you with excitement rather than anxiety, please bid vigorously - Mrs Vendor will be eternally grateful!
