By 1982, the strategists at General Motors had become extremely concerned about the impact that the emerging fuel crisis might have on sales of the big V8 Corvette.

They hastily sanctioned a new sports car concept, designed to appeal to a fresh market; people who still wanted something sporty, but demanded a car with more social responsibility. Their answer was the Pontiac Fiero, America’s first mass-produced mid-engine sports car, a ground-breaking design which included the extensive use of plastic panels to keep weight to a minimum.

Launched in 1984, initial demand was so strong that the factory couldn’t keep up, despite working flat-out over three shifts, seven days a week. Over 370,000 were eventually produced, the car outselling the Toyota MR2 two-to-one in the home market for two years on the trot.

It used a 110bhp version of the long-stroke ‘Iron Duke’ 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and had a long-legged fifth gear which enabled it to do nearly 40mpg on the highway. Sadly this engine lacked sparkle, its long stroke limiting its ability to rev nicely and the reputation of the car suffered as a consequence. Still considered a ground-breaking design, it has a strong following amongst American car devotees who loved it for its sharp looks, rugged simplicity and economy.

This rather sorry example has emerged from the garage of a local deceased estate. Sadly nothing is known of its history, save that it was first UK registered in 1990 and, according to the chassis number, is an SE model dating from 1984. There is an old style log book and the number is recognised by the DVLA so the new owner should be able to apply for a current V5 in the normal way. Very seldom seen in the UK and strikingly styled, it is sure to attract a lot of attention once back on the road and is being offered here at no reserve so the highest bid takes it!
