After the Second World War the Moto Guzzi factory looked to produce a small economic lightweight machine to get the populace mobile once again.

The first prototypes appeared in 1945 featuring a 65cc two-stroke engine with a three-speed gearbox suspended from a 50mm tubular beam frame. Marketed from 1946, the first production machines were properly named the Motoleggera 65 but were commonly referred to as the ‘Guzzino’ (little Guzzi).

Initially fitted with a simple lever-controlled throttle, its small 2bhp engine was enough to power the machine to 50kmh. Gradually refined over the years, electric lighting and horn were added along with design changes to the silencer system and additional chrome detailing.

Such was the popularity of the Guzzino that in 1949 some 14,257 people on 12,660 machines gathered in Mandello del Lano to set a world record for the most machines of a single brand and model to gather in one location. Production of the Guzzino ceased in 1954 when it was replaced by the Zigolo model, by which time some 71,534 units had been sold.

The Guzzino on offer here dates from 1953 and appears to be in excellent cosmetic, restored condition. A lovely lightweight machine that still has vintage appeal, it has recently come from a collection in Italy and has not yet been UK registered but the process should be straightforward with the relevant DVLA form. There should be no import duty payable as it has come from within the EU. Catalogue Amendment: NOVA document to follow.
