With brilliant steering, suspension and brakes that blessed even the bog standard version with go-kart handling, the light and compact Mini was a born competition car.

Naturally Mini soon capitalised on this, launching their own hot Mini Cooper in 1961 with a tuned 997cc engine that produced 55bhp. A real giant-slayer, its extraordinary agility meant it could easily humble much more powerful cars both on road and track, although it was perhaps most famous for winning the gruelling Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967 (it won the 1966 rally as well, but in true ‘cheese-eating-surrender-monkey’ fashion, it was disqualified by the French judges on totally spurious grounds).

A vast array of tuning products have long been widely available which allow any week-end mechanic to transform their own humble Mini into a screaming track or rally weapon at relatively modest cost. And while this car is no Cooper, it is a well-sorted pocket rocket that will have you grinning from ear-to-ear as you spray the scenery with gravel thrown up from its furiously spinning tyres.

First registered in March 1974 as a standard Austin Mini 1000, it has recently had some £7,000 thrown at it during a bare shell rebuild using many specialist parts, all fully itemised in the sheaf of invoices that come with the car. To pick just a few, it has: a rebuilt engine and gearbox; 4-branch manifold; new brakes all round including Cooper 7.5" front discs; Bilstein shocks at each corner; new track rod ends and ball joints; roll cage; sump guard; fire extinguisher; new battery; full respray; race seats and Britax harnesses; Minilite-style alloy wheels etc.

Said to drive “spot on” with an MOT until May 2016 and eligible for free Historic road tax, it is just the kind of toy that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and get you into plenty of excellent mischief! With all the hard work done and ready to go out and play, it is being offered here at significantly less than the money lavished upon it to date.
