Without doubt one of the prettiest roadsters ever made, the Pagoda SL is also superbly well-built and is one of those rare classics that you can genuinely use every day.

Launched in 1963, the W113 class (as it was properly known) eventually spanned three engine sizes, all fuel-injected: the initial 150bhp 2.3-litre; the similarly powerful 2.5 in 1966 and the 170bhp 2.8-litre in 1967. Suspension was by double wishbones and coil springs at the front, with a typical Mercedes-Benz coil-sprung swing axle at the rear. All cars had front disc brakes (and rear on the 280) with power steering from 1964 onwards, and all models were capable of over 110mph.

All looked identical with a low waistline, wide stance, fishbowl headlamps and big curved greenhouse windows topped with that distinctive dished removable hardtop – hence the 'Pagoda' name. The styling perfectly sums up the car, being elegant yet muscular and sporty yet immensely solid - a rare combination of virtues.

More than just a pretty face, a 230SL Manual was driven to victory in one of Europe’s toughest rallies, the Spa-Sophia-Liege in 1963. Although everyone assumes that the bigger engined 280 must be the SL to have, those in the know will tell you that the 230 is actually a nicer car to drive being virtually as quick but noticeably smoother and lighter with more nimble handling.

This 230SL manual is being offered from a deceased estate, having joined a large collection of vehicles in 1992. Sold by Hereford based Mifflin Motors, it was put into regular use before gradually taking back-stage, eventually being placed into dry storage around six years ago. The V5 shows that it has had four previous owners and it comes complete with hard top. The hood appears to be in excellent condition, this being a genuine two-seater with hood rather than the ‘California’ three-seat model which doesn’t come with any weather equipment save its hard top.

Fitted with four new tyres and although MOTd at present, it is due to carry a fresh test in time for the sale. A presentable car which is ready for use, it would benefit from some cosmetic work to bring it up to scratch and is estimated accordingly.

Bidders are advised that the personalised number 3 JOL shown in the pictures is not included in the sale.

AMENDMENT: The V5C is now here and the registration number is DFH 125B
