WE REGRET TO SAY THAT THIS CAR HAS NOW BEEN WITHDRAWN

Recently voted Britain’s favourite classic car by the general public, the Michelotti-styled Triumph Stag was designed to be a gentleman's sports tourer to compete head-on with rivals like the Mercedes SL.

Sold between 1970 and 1978, it was a full four-seater and was powered by an all-new Triumph-designed 2,997cc V8 engine that produced 145bhp, sufficient to propel the car to a heady 115mph. With independent suspension all round, front disc brakes, power steering and a Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic gearbox option, it had sophisticated road manners and the most wonderfully woofly exhaust note of any car made on this side of the Atlantic.

Dating from August 1975, this Stag Automatic was reputedly first owned by the Chairman of Fulham Football Club and comes with a very large history file dating back to 1990. This shows that the bodywork was restored in 1997 and the engine was overhauled in 1998 at 77,800 miles (the odometer now showing 93,500 miles).

However the really impressive expenditure occurs from 2011 onwards when the vendor acquired the car. A dedicated Stag enthusiast and club member, he has spared no expense in getting the car in tip-top mechanical shape for the extended touring holidays which the car was bought for. This has included fitting a reconditioned exchange gearbox and torque converter which is mated to a reconditioned 3.45:1 rear axle for more relaxed high speed cruising.

Other improvements and upgrades include: new shock absorbers and springs all round; virtually all new braking system; uprated radiator; Xenon headlights; new stainless steel exhaust (which sounds magnificent); new fuel tank; new bumpers front and rear; wind deflector; new inertia reel seatbelts; a new hood plus a host of other items all detailed in the history file. Currently fitted with Minilite-style alloys, the original Stag alloys are also included, along with an original hardtop, although these will need to be collected from the vendor’s home in Worcestershire.

Said to drive beautifully with an MOT until March 2016 (with no advisories recorded) this thoroughly sorted Stag is ready to enjoy right away and is only reluctantly for sale due to illness.
