Launched in 1989, the MX5 was one of those rare cars that became an instant classic the day it was born.

Designed from the outset to deliver a seat-of-the-pants driving experience unencumbered by any unnecessary weight or mechanical complexity, it was a direct descendant of the small British roadsters of the 1960s such as the MG Midget and Lotus Elan. Nimble, quick and 100% reliable, it won fans right across the globe.

With a steel body and alloy bonnet, it was powered by a 115bhp fuel-injected 1.6-litre engine, mated to a five-speed gearbox, that could propel the little car to 60 in 9.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 120mph. With perfect 50:50 weight distribution and independent double-wishbone suspension all round, it was just as happy taking granny to the shops as it was being hammered round a race track.

In 1998, Mazda released the second-generation MX-5 which was slightly wider and more aerodynamic than the previous model and had conventional open headlamps rather than pop-up units. In 2001 the model received another minor facelift including a more sporting interior with white faced instruments and more supportive seats with taller headrests. Later cars got bigger engines and slightly more power, but they also got heavier and the driving experience became diluted.

Dating from March 1999 this Mk2 1.6 has been in the current ownership for almost three years and has covered only 68,000 miles with an excellent service history comprising 11 stamps to date, the last less than 3,000 miles ago, and was also fitted with a new cam belt less than 5,000 miles ago. Silver with a dark blue soft top and tonneau, it has a full black leather interior and a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Said to be in very good condition throughout with no known faults, it is also said to drive beautifully and will have a fresh MOT in time for the sale. Being offered here at a fraction of the price of a comparable MGB, this fast and nimble modern classic is guaranteed to put the fun back into driving for the lucky new owner.
