Launched in 1962 to replace the MGA which had done wonders for the reputation of the marque and sold in previously unheard-of numbers, the MGB was also an immediate success.

Powered by an enlarged 1,789cc version of the BMC 'B' series engine with pushrod operated overhead-valves, it developed a useful 94bhp, could hit 100mph with ease and produced bags of torque at very low revs. Providing comfortable accommodation for two, it was available in both GT and Roadster forms, both with plenty of luggage carrying capacity and remains a very pleasing and practical classic today.

The accompanying Heritage Certificate for this well-loved Roadster shows that it was ordered in Glacier white with navy trim and a black hood. Completed on 22 March 1972, it was despatched two days later to Kennings Car Mart in Ealing, London. It was specified with wire wheels, overdrive and a tonneau cover and was registered NME 290L on 1 August of that year.

A print out from the DVLA lists nine previous owners, its most recent acquiring the car back in 1999. There are five old MOTs on file, showing that just 3,600 miles have been added since 2006, the large file of bills accounting for care and maintenance over the last 16 years.

An earlier bill dating from 1990 shows that the MG Owners Club workshop undertook work to the value £4,000 including new sills and paintwork and in 1997 they also supplied a works-style hard-top which remains with the car.

In 2011 the engine was given an overhaul and a new clutch was fiitted, the car being driven over 150 miles to the sale, a journey which it took in its stride. In sound and usable condition, this realistically estimated Mk II Roadster is ready for a new owner to enjoy.
