The Mobylette was part of another French Revolution. At home as much in the country carrying chickens to market as in central Paris during rush hour, they replaced everything from the horse and trap to the Gendarme's bicycle.
Produced by the Motobecane company, some 14 million were produced between 1949 and 1997, the word Mobylette or ‘Moby’ becoming a generic term in France for any small-engined motorcycle. Built under licence in both Britain by Raleigh and in India under the name Suvega, there is now a cult following for these iconic and stylish machines.
This delightfully original 1971 model has the later 40T two-stroke 49cc engine and ‘Dymoby’ clutch which allows the rider to simply open the throttle from standstill to get going – earlier models requiring some pedalling to get them away from rest.
A genuine UK supplied machine from new, it was first registered in 1971 and came into the hands of the vendor in 2006 directly from its original owner.
Showing 6,472 miles on the clock, it hasn’t been used for a few years although recently burst into life with a bit of fresh fuel and a good downhill push. Sold with a current V5 and a box of Mobylette engine parts, it is eligible for all sorts of road events designed specifically for such tiny machines or would make a very cool paddock bike at race meetings, looking particularly fetching in its original ‘70s orange colour scheme.
AMENDMENT; the vendor advises us that although in running order, it could do with a tune up.
