The elegant Pininfarina styled MGB GT was first shown to the public in 1965 and they immediately fell in love. Practical, pretty and sporting, it had everything going for it and the public bought it in their droves.

The 95bhp 1,798cc engine had enough poke to make the MG truly qualify as a sportscar and when coupled with the overdrive gearbox gave genuine 90mph cruising. This means that an MGB, 50 years after its debut, still outperforms most traffic on the road, gives excellent fuel economy while its owner can take advantage of the best parts availability for any car in existence, including of course the supply of new bodyshells! No wonder they are so popular.

Updated over the years, the MkII arrived in late 1967 with a 4-synchro gearbox and a wider gearbox tunnel, a model which lasted until 1972 when the Mk III arrived with an updated dashboard and numerous other small detail changes.

As is so often the case with classics, the earliest model is somehow the most elegant and pleasant to drive and this is certainly the case with the MGB. The prettier chrome grille, dainty switchgear and more spartan interior got lost on the later versions, the last of the line rubber-bumper models being quite different cars in character.

This nicely presented MkI GT comes with a large history file of invoices and bills. There is a BMIHT Heritage Certificate which confirms its original colour as Grampian grey with black leather upholstery piped in white, the car being completed in February 1967 and dispatched to Brittons of Brighton on 3rd March fitted with wire wheels, heater and overdrive.

We have been informed by the vendor that it is in very nice condition and has just been fitted with a new set of carpets and looks very smart on its painted wire wheels. Unlike most GTs of the period, it has also escaped the ubiquitous Webasto sunroof conversion which adds to its appeal amongst the serious MGB aficionados.

MOTd until June 2016, these desirable early MkI GTs are few and far between, so its very much a case of getting one while you can.

AMENDMENT; We would like to advise bidders that this car has just driven over 140 miles to the sale.
