The wonderful X300 range of Jaguar/Daimler saloons came out in 1994 and marked a return to form for the Big Cat’s styling, with sleek and muscular lines replacing the slabby angularity of the outgoing XJ40 range.

Thanks to the deep pockets of new owner Ford, who had invested some £200m in upgrading Jaguar’s production facilities, the X300 was also much better built than previous models with improvements in many areas. The superb AJ16 engine was now fitted to the six-cylinder models, being an upgrade of the previous AJ6 unit with sophisticated new engine management systems, coil-on-plug distributorless ignition, magnesium alloy valve covers, improved pistons plus numerous other tweaks. It was available in 3.2-litre and 4-litre capacities, the former producing 219bhp and the latter 245bhp, giving the 4-litre a top speed of 144mph and a 0-60 time of just 7 seconds.

Only in production until 1997 when it was replaced by the V8-powered X308 range, the X300 is widely considered to be one of the nicest and easiest to own Jaguars ever produced with an enviable reputation for reliability.

This Daimler 4-litre dates from October 1995 and was converted to limousine spec from new by Eagle Specialist Vehicles of Bolton, the manufacturing arm of coachbuilders Wilcox Limousines who have been making hearses and limos since 1948. A full seven-seater, it has spent all its life as a funeral car and has covered less than 82,000 miles to date, all at a very sedate pace, needless to say!

In good condition throughout with a smart grey leather interior and an electric glass division, it has reportedly been well-maintained throughout its life although the service book is only showing three stamps up to 33,451 miles in 2000, subsequent maintenance being undertaken by in-house fleet mechanics.

Supplied with all its original handbooks and due to have a fresh MOT in time for the sale, this vast and elegant machine has endless commercial possibilities but would also be a great way to take a group of friends to Goodwood and other sporting events.

AMENDMENT: The handbooks are not here at the moment but will be very shortly
