Launched in 1967, the Chevrolet Camaro was a direct response to Ford’s all-conquering Mustang, sharing its platform and all major components with the Pontiac Firebird, also introduced in 1967.

Four distinct generations of the car were produced before production seemingly ended in 2002, although after an eight-year break Chevrolet revived the Camaro name for the superb 5th generation model which made a surprise appearance in 2010 and promptly won the ‘World Car Design of the Year’ award’.

The 4th generation, as here, ran from 1993 to 2002 and retained the traditional two-door, 2+2 body style but with extensive use of plastics which not only kept the weight down but also allowed the car to have a highly extrovert ‘shark nose’ without compromising safety standards for other road users.

You don’t buy a Camaro to blend in with other traffic, you buy one to stand out, and the sight of its predatory snout looming in the rear view mirror is enough to make most drivers clear of your way pretty sharpish, the muscular rear haunches only confirming that they made the right decision. This thing looks like it is breaking the speed limit even when standing still.

A 1993 model, it was imported to the UK from Japan in April 2005 and is said by the vendor to be “in great condition and doesn't look its age at all, with superb paintwork and no signs of rust whatsoever”. Powered by a 160bhp pushrod V6 mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, it can sprint to 60mph in 8.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 130mph with 23mpg economy in normal use.

It has covered only some 91,500kms (around 57,000 miles) and is said to drive very well with an MOT until the end of July 2015. Recently fitted with four new tyres, it is also fitted with a Thatcham-approved immobiliser to keep thieves at bay, especially those who work in insurance. Looking like a million dollars, it is being offered here at a derisory fraction of that amount so stick your hands up please – at this price it would be rude not to!
