A real show stopper when first unveiled, the 1968 XJ6 shook the industry to the core. How could it be possible to make a car so good looking, offer such performance, ride quality and overall sophistication for so little money? And that was before they announced the mighty 5.3-litre V12 version.

Without doubt one of the greatest saloon cars of all time, it was still recognisably the same car over thirty years later. Following a rather bland interlude with the XJ40 in the mid ‘80s, the good news was that Jaguar had managed to use this model to kick the company into the new age of modern production techniques and German reliability, although it wasn’t until the mid-‘90s that the model range regained its mojo thanks to the masterful eye of Geoff Lawson, Jaguar’s chief stylist. Back came the Jaguar’s curvy shape that had so defined William Lyons’ designs back to the original SS saloon.

In 1997 things got better still with the launch of the X308 which had a revised interior, minor external styling tweaks and new adaptive suspension. But the big news was under the bonnet which now housed a magnificent V8 in either 3.2 or 4-litre capacity. With 240bhp and 290bhp respectively, these units were paragons of refinement and reliability and the X308 became the best-selling luxury car in the UK.

First registered in November 1998, this particular 3.2-litre model has covered 79,500 miles from new, having received a replacement engine fitted under warranty by Minster Jaguar of York at 51,626 miles. With a full service history up to 72,000 miles, it is said to be in “immaculate” condition inside and out with a beautiful cream leather interior and unmarked Champagne Gold coachwork.

Said to drive beautifully with everything working as it should, including the air conditioning, it is MOTd until April 2016 next year and looks like a huge amount of luxury for very little outlay.
