BL’s original plan had been to replace the ageing Mini with the clever new Metro. Successful though the new car was, the original Mini not only managed a stay of execution, but even outlived its replacement.

Much of this was due to clever marketing by RSP (Rover Special Projects). Initially the relaunch of the Cooper saved the day, but a whole raft of special models were introduced one after the other which kept interest in the car alive.

Tweaked in one way or another with the clever use of fresh colours, graphics and the judicious use of the parts bin, a perfect case in point was the special edition Flame Red model introduced in 1989.

Restricted to just 1,000 cars, the Mini City based Flame Red used the attractive Cooper three-dial dash, retaining the economical and cheap to insure 998cc engine. Black ‘crayons’ fabric upholstery, chrome bumpers, black grille and Flame Red graphics kit finished off the piece, the car sitting on steel wheels with full-width white wheel trims.

First registered in March 1989, this smart example has had four previous owners and has covered 73,500 miles from new. It is described by the vendor as totally standard with no modifications apart from the Minilite style wheels (with new tyres), although the original steel items, complete with white wheel trims are included in the sale.

Coxhill Classics in Knighton undertook restoration work and a windows-out respray in the correct colour (with white roof), work which included stripping the bodywork and fitting new inner and outer sills, ‘A’ panels, front panel, rear valance and some small repairs to the boot floor. The car was then built up with new window rubbers.

In very smart condition, it has just been treated to a minor service and a new exhaust, its history file including a part stamped service book, original handbook and instructions for the original Philips radio.

MOTd until the end of August this year, it is nice to find an original specification Mini, so many of them having been modified, a factor which must have a detrimental effect to their long-term investment potential.

Amendment: The vendor has put a note on the dash to say the choke cable is broken.
