Just rippling with muscle and pent up aggression, the BMW Z3 was launched in the UK in January 1997.
Designed at BMW’s Californian design studio by Joji Nagashima, it featured a distinctive flared bonnet with aggressive side vents that looked like they should have exhaust stubs poking through, spitting flames as it howled past.
While the excellent handling, powerful brakes and snappy 5-speed gearbox were all highly praised, the modestly powered 140bhp 1.9-litre engine didn’t spit much in the way of flames, although it did prove economical and entertaining. With air bags, electric hood and a luxuriously trimmed cabin, it was everything a modern sportscar should be and sales were strong from the outset.
This March 2002 model benefits from all the upgrades that were added to the car before production was phased out later that year with the introduction of the Z4. These included rollover bars behind the seats, side airbags, Dynamic Brake Control for enhanced stopping power and revised tail styling.
It has had four previous owners and comes in attractive silver with a black leather interior and has been in the current ownership for the last four years. Fitted with traction control, working air conditioning, electric seats and its original hand book and tool kit, the service book is stamped up to 2011 and further service bills are on file. It has covered 84,000 miles and we are advised that the hood is in good condition with no tears.
MOTd until May 2016, this clean and smart example looks like a lot of fun for a very modest outlay.
