Launched by BMC in 1958 to replace the highly successful Austin A35, the A40 Farina was a strikingly modern car with clean, functional lines penned by Pininfarina of Italy.

Initially powered by the A-Series 948cc 34bhp engine, this was replaced by a 1098cc 48bhp unit in the MkII version in 1961. The MkII also had a longer wheelbase, new front grill and dashboard and fully hydraulic brakes. Robust, stylish and practical, with a top speed approaching 90mph, it was a great export success for BMC, even in the USA where it was quaintly marketed as 'The Gayest Economy Sedan Ever'.

Purchased by the vendor in 2013, this very nicely presented maroon A40 MkII comes with a number of bills on file. It received a bottom-end overhaul in 1984 and more recently sill repairs in 2009 costing £560. An additional £300 was lashed out on front and rear ‘new old stock’ bumpers (a lucky find) and a new dynamo and voltage control unit have recently been added.

According to the V5C, it has had just four previous owners over its 51 years and the original London number plate remains transferable. With wonderful clean-cut Sixties lines, this smart and practical classic is MOTd until May 2016 and looks very tempting at the modest guide price suggested.
