The original Ford Escort was launched way back in 1968 and remained in production until 2002, going through six generations along the way.

Over 4.1 million examples were sold in Britain making it the most popular car ever made for the domestic market. The Mk5 cars were made from 1990 to 1996 and, as usual, quickly became the best-selling models in the country, despite a somewhat lukewarm reception from the motoring press. Engines ranged from a 59bhp 1.3-litre to the 224bhp 2-litre turbocharged unit found in the Cosworth with its signature whale-tail spoiler. In the middle of the range was the 1.6-litre EFi (as here) which produced a useful 108bhp.

Compared to the previous Mk4, ride and handling was improved on all Mk5 models, and the specification was higher than ever with features such as power steering, electric windows, central locking, ABS brakes and air conditioning being available across the range, depending on the trim specified.

First registered in August 1991, this Radiant Red Cabriolet 1.6EFi has covered only 32,500 miles in the hands of just three owners, the second of whom kept it for 11 years before the vendor acquired it in 2008. Said to by him to be in “excellent” condition throughout, it has recently had a new mohair hood fitted (power operated and working as it should), and also benefits from electric windows and power steering. Just recommissioned after a two-year lay-up, the car is said to drive very well with an MOT until May 2016 and a good service history.

Supplied with all its original handbooks, this low-mileage cracker looks like a steal at the modest guide price suggested and now just needs a new owner with more time in which to enjoy it. With the good weather we have been experiencing of late, it should provide a lot of top-down fun over the remaining summer months – don’t forget to keep some sun tan lotion in the glove box!
