The Land Rover Series II was launched 10 years after the appearance of the original car, and was an exercise in improving the product without changing its intrinsic appeal. Which was a good thing, as a decade after its launch the Land Rover was still proving to be hugely popular.

The Series II was easily identifiable by its revised styling, but it also had a usefully bigger engine, now powered by a new 2.25-litre petrol engine. The Series IIa that followed 18 months later was further improved to include a 2.6-litre petrol engine in the LWB version, and a new 2.25-litre diesel, significantly enhancing the Land Rover’s appeal in export markets. It was this design that stayed in production – basically unchanged – until 1990.

First registered in Gloucestershire in October 1964, this Series IIa 88-inch truck cab has been in the current local ownership for 10 years with just four owners before that. The indicated mileage of around 53,000 is believed genuine (but can’t be warranted) and the vendor states that it is in good and largely original condition throughout.

A petrol-engine model, it is said to run and drive well with an MOT until May 2016 and has recently been fitted with a new clutch and a new carburettor. Supplied with its original seats, spare wheel and some service history, this nice unmolested old workhorse is just how we like to find them. The caddish number plate just adds to its old school appeal!
