The ultimate development of Royal Enfield’s unit construction 250cc Crusader, the Continental GT arrived in November 1964.
For his £270 of hard-earned wedge, the budding café-bar racer got a learner legal machine equipped with clip-on handlebars, rear set footrests, ‘bacon slicer’ wheel discs, fibreglass race replica fuel tank and a five-speed gearbox. Power was enhanced by an extra 1.5bhp over the standard offering by substituting a higher compression piston and suitable carburettor tuning.
With its racer styling and brisk performance, the Continental GT was every young motorcyclist's dream and a well-deserved success for the Redditch company. Specialist dealers such as Gander & Gray supplied further performance extras and race parts for the rider who wanted even more from this ‘peppy’ machine.
On offer here is a 1965 model Continental GT which has clearly been souped up somewhat in the past. While still retaining some of its period parts and genuine GT engine, it has had the café racer treatment with the addition of a smart nose fairing and an upswept exhaust for greater ground clearance when really ‘getting down to it’.
Presented in ‘as found’ condition, it still retains that sporting presence and is now in need of a straightforward restoration to return it to its former glory. Largely complete in most important respects barring a few minor items, it comes with an old RF60 green logbook that should be enough to regain its original registration, JFK 934C, under the DVLA's V765 scheme.
