The MGA was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 1955 and was a radical departure from MG’s traditional ash framed models that had come before.
It was called the MGA as it represented a new beginning and was even marketed as the “first of a new line”. Beautifully styled on the Syd Enever-designed Le Mans-bodied TD, it used a strong cross braced chassis with steel bodywork attached. Len Lord had originally rejected its radically modern shape having just signed a deal with Donald Healey to produce the Austin-Healey, however falling sales at MG prompted him to review his ideas.
In production until 1962 when the ubiquitous MGB was launched, it proved a huge success with over 101,000 examples produced of which only 5,900 were sold in the UK market.
The Heritage Certificate shows that his sound and usable example was originally built for the UK market and painted Glacier Blue and trimmed in Grey with an Ice Blue hood. It was built in January 1956 and dispatched in February of that year to be registered in Oxfordshire.
The vendor acquired the car relatively recently and has used it actively over the summer months. It is MOTd until March 2016 although exempt from such things and has recently had a new water pump fitted. A number of old bills and invoices show recent expenditure and it comes with a snug fitting hood and sidescreens.
Ready to go, this usable, UK supplied MGA looks most appealing, especially given the surge in interest (and value) experienced by these charismatic cars of late, with many rating them as the finest model that MG ever built.
