The Capri 3.0S was the ultimate evolution of one of the UK's favourite sporting cars and this example must surely be one of the finest in existence.
A regular Concours d’Elegance contender from the 1980’s onwards, this 1979 model has always been cherished and has received an almost fanatical level of maintenance and restoration over the years. Finished in Venetian Red, this 3.0S retains its original bodyshell, a fact that has been confirmed by independent inspection, displaying the unique areas that distinguish a genuine 3-litre shell from its lesser siblings, such as the reinforced front inner wings, engine bay strengthening fillets and the boot light ‘delete’.
The engine bay is pristine and correct, down to the original Ford air filter housing which remains in place. The top of the front suspension strut shows the correct Ford stamped chassis number and the riveted chassis plate displays its correct reverse-stamped chassis number.
The 3.0S models could be optioned with desirable ‘Carla-check fishnet’ seats from Recaro, the high standard of interior finish being completed with a three-spoke RS sports steering wheel and a comprehensively stacked dashboard. A factory fitted ‘tilt and slide’ steel sunroof and opening rear quarter windows are other desirable options fitted to this car, in fact the only option not ticked when ordered was the extra-cost metallic paint. Although currently sitting on attractive but non-standard RS wheels, the original wheels are included in the sale.
A genuine four owner Capri, it comes with a mass of history which includes regular servicing and restoration bills. An original handbook, service book and brochure are also on file, as are the original Perrys Ford main dealer number plates.
The vendor is unable to substantiate the indicated 14,500 miles on the odometer and doesn’t believe it to be correct, but adds that this superb example is MOTd until April 2016, is ready to show and drives as well as it looks. Not much else to say really, except bid vigorously enough and it could be you who takes it home…
This Capri comes from a small collection of performance Fords entered by Pete Tomlinson whose aim was to amass all the cars he dreamed of owning as a young man. The collection is being sold to make way for a building project.
