Sold between 1970 and 1978, the Michelotti-styled Triumph Stag was designed to be a gentleman's sports tourer to compete head-on with rivals like the Mercedes SL.

A full four-seater, it was powered by an all-new Triumph-designed 2,997cc V8 engine that produced 145bhp, sufficient to propel the car to a heady 118mph with a wonderfully woofly exhaust note. With independent suspension all round, front disc brakes, power steering and a Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic gearbox, it had sophisticated road manners and has always ranked as one of Britain’s most popular classic cars.

First registered in March 1974, this Triumph Stag automatic comes with a large history file. Comprehensively restored in 2005, a series of photographs show the extent of the work that went into the body shell restoration. Originally supplied in British Racing Green, its owner had the car professionally repainted BMW metallic blue, a colour which suits the car extremely well. A new tan interior was added along with Navy blue thick-pile carpets that extend into the boot area. The dashboard was upgraded to highly polished walnut veneer and a useful luggage rack fitted to the boot.

The accompanying hardtop has been painted to match the bodywork and the hood is trimmed in black Mohair, a ‘Boss wind deflector’ system attaching to the Tee Bar to keep out the draughts, making all day hood down cruising a pleasure.

A set of ‘bolt on’ chrome wire wheels are currently fitted, the original alloys being included in the sale. Stainless Steel exhaust manifolds, a ‘spin off’ oil filter, electric fan and an upgraded radiator header tank conversion complete the list of modifications which help ensure reliability.

With an MOT test until March 2016, 16 old MOT certificates, original handbook, sales brochure, comprehensive restoration history and a Heritage certificate, this Stag reads as well as it looks.

This lot forms part of the Pete Tomlinson collection.

AMENDMENT; The hard top has cosmetic damage and would require repainting to complement the quality of the car.
