Launched in 1987 and remaining in production until 1995, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W124) is widely recognised as the last of the 'over-engineered' Mercedes models before cost-cutting began to erode the marque's once impregnable reputation for money-no-object design integrity.

It was available in saloon, estate, coupe and convertible guises with a bewildering array of petrol and diesel engine options from a humble 2-litre four-cylinder to a snorting 326bhp 5-litre V8. Beautifully balanced and equipped with Mercedes' superlatively sure-footed multi-link rear suspension, all had nicely weighted power-assisted steering, excellent disc brakes and a unique and highly effective single windscreen wiper.

In the middle of the range sat the 260E, produced from 1987 to 1990, which had a silky smooth 170bhp 2.6-litre straight-six that could propel it from rest to 60mph in 8 seconds with a top speed of 135mph in almost uncanny silence from within. Very expensive when new, they were immensely hard wearing inside and out, with a reputation for devouring spaceship mileages with ease.

First registered in March 1990, this late model 260E looks very sharp indeed and you would scarcely believe that it is now 25 years old. Finished in light blue metallic with a blue check-cloth interior, it has covered less than 40,000 miles to date with a good history to warrant this total including a Mercedes print-out showing nine services up to 26,451 miles in 2001 plus various bills showing at least two or three services since.

Between September 2010 and June 2015 the car had just one owner who barely used it and kept it garaged, MOT mileage records showing that it covered less than 330 miles from February 2011 to May 2014. The car’s precise mileage is hard to determine because the odometer stopped working some time between May 2014 and May 2015 but the 34,129 miles indicated cannot be far wrong because the car was hardly (if ever) used during that period.

Collected from its place of storage by one of our staff shortly before the auction, it was driven some 60 miles to Brightwells and performed faultlessly throughout. Equipment includes an electric steel sunroof, air conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, rear head restraints, walnut dash and door trim, ABS brakes and a remote control Pioneer CD/radio system. MOTd until May 2016 with no advisories recorded, it is barely even run in yet and no doubt has years of useful life ahead of it.
