Jaguar launched its sporting XJS model in 1975 as a replacement for the legendary E-Type, the model simply getting better and better as the years rolled by.

Far more sophisticated than the E-Type, it was a paragon of stability and silence at speed with superb handling for such a big car. In 1991 the car was substantially re-engineered including an all-new 4-litre 24-valve AJ6 (Advanced Jaguar 6) engine that was virtually as quick as the old V12 but with far superior fuel economy (235bhp, 140mph and 26mpg).

From 1994, the AJ6 engine was heavily revised to coincide with the launch of the X300 saloon. It was even better; thanks to the individual ‘coil on plug’ ignition coils and new engine management as well as a myriad of other minor improvements. Reliability was excellent and these AJ6/AJ16 engines have been known to clock up huge mileages without drama.

General build quality also improved markedly with a galvanized body shell finally putting paid to that old Jaguar bugbear – rust. The styling was also refreshed by Geoff Lawson who gave it a sleeker, more modern look that still turns heads today.

This last of the line XJS comes with the later AJ16 engine installed and has been well maintained, invoices showing regular servicing as far back as 2002. It has clocked just under 86,000 miles in total, just 100 of which have taken place this year.

One of the ‘run-out’ Celebration models, it was ordered in attractive Turquoise livery with Ivory leather  seats with Coffee coloured piping. When driven out to take the photographs, it drove nicely exhibiting good oil pressure. The car retains its original handbook and there are 12 old MOTs on file, the current ticket expiring in January 2016.

The vendor, a serial Jaguar enthusiast is reluctantly selling the car because he is currently in the process of buying a holiday house in France and will have even less time to enjoy the car.

AMENDMENT: The headlining on this car has become detached and will need re-fitting. We have also been advised that this may not be a Celebration model as previously stated (and as listed in the printed catalogue) because these had a wooden-topped gear lever and a wood-and-leather steering wheel. Bidders are advised to form their own opinion on this matter.
