History
Nicknamed the 'Panzerwagen' by it's German development engineers in the late 1960s, the W107 series SL Mercedes has long since cemented its reputation as one of the most durable, useable classics of all time. Phenomenally strong and well built, its square-jawed good looks were a deliberate ploy by the MB management to distance it from its more feminine 'Pagoda' W113 predecessor.
Fast, comfortable and discreetly understated, it has a matchless ability to munch up the miles for year after year without ever seeming to falter. No wonder it stayed in production fundamentally unaltered from 1971 until 1989. Powered by a 5-litre alloy V8, the example you see here is the flagship of the range, the mighty 500SL.
First registered in 1983, this SL has had just three owners from new and has a full service history to date. Now with 105,700 miles under its wheels, it is said to drive very well indeed with a beautifully smooth gearchange. Recently treated to four new tyres, it also has a 10-stack CD system and retains both hard and soft tops and its original owner's handbook. With an MOT until September 2008, it is only being sold due to an impending house move.
