In production from 1959 until 1962, the modern three-box Ford Popular 100E was available alongside the pre-war styled ‘sit up and beg’ 103E model.

One step up from the basic ladder-framed design, the 100E had a monocoque bodyshell, coil springs and hydraulic brakes. Its strengthened 1,172cc side valve ‘10hp’ engine gave 36bhp, sufficient for a top whack of 70mph, whilst 50mph took 20 seconds to reach from a standstill.

Probably of more importance to the general public was an average of 33mpg and while service intervals were still every 1,000 miles, the number of grease nipples had at least been reduced by half, giving dad a bit more time to spend reading the sports pages at the weekend rather than crawling around under his car.

Promoted as the lowest priced saloon on the market, the 100E cost £494 including taxes (equivalent to 6 months’ pay for the average British worker of the time) and well over 100,000 were sold, making it a relatively common sight on the roads of a country that was only just emerging from a period of grim post-war austerity.

Originally registered WAW 811, this Pop DeLuxe was supplied new by Furrows Ltd of Coton Hill, Shrewsbury, in January 1961, as shown by a nameplate in the door (the original number was replaced by RSJ 272 in 1998). Well maintained and always in regular use in recent times, it has clocked up some 5,000 miles in the past five years. Recently fitted parts include a new battery, radiator, water pump, fuel pump and tyres, the car also benefitting from a full service not too many miles ago.

Looking good in grey with a well-preserved red interior, it has been in the current ownership for just over two years and is only reluctantly being sold because the mature owner has had to give up driving for health reasons. Supplied with sundry invoices for upkeep and many old MOT certificates, it also comes with a maintenance manual and a spare set of keys. MOTd until July 2016 with no advisories recorded, it is on the button and ready to go.
