The versatile Volkswagen T2 Transporter was offered in a vast array of different models, from the basic panel van, truck cab pickup, camper van and people mover, the precursor of today’s ubiquitous MPV.

In 1967 it received a major facelift, replacing the distinctive split windscreen with a full-width bay window and gained a sliding side door and more robust 1,600cc engine. Later models were to use the larger 1.7- and 2.0-litre engines from the 411 and 412 models, necessitating major changes to the engine compartment, although externally the most obvious difference on these was the relocation of the indicators to just under the windscreen.

A true icon of the ‘60s and ‘70s, the VW van became the symbol of the peace-loving ‘Hippie’ although the vast majority of owners just used them to do a normal job of work. Loved by all, they offered reliable service to millions of people, remaining in production in Brazil until as recently as late 2013. Their survival rate has been nothing short of phenomenal given that most were worked hard for a living, being kept mobile through a combination of peace and love, sound engineering and a spare parts network like no other.

This original ‘uncut’ Microbus Deluxe was purchased by its owner in 2004 from its long-term owners. Resisting the temptation to chop the roof and put in a ‘pop-top’, she has remained content to simply remove the middle seats when going on her regular holidays and camping excursions.

Over the years it has received much love and attention, photographs on file showing an extensive £7,000 body restoration in 2008 which included a new door, sill, rear ¼ panels and replacement glass. The car was subsequently resprayed and in 2011 fitted with a new Just Kampers wiring loom.

An original RHD UK supplied vehicle, it retains its rare eight-seat configuration, including the full-width middle seat with folding single backrest, the interior remaining in original and serviceable condition. The powerful twin carburettor 1,970cc twin carburettor engine runs sweetly, giving this lightweight van better performance than most. The engine has only recently been given a thorough service, including stripping and balancing the carburettors, adjusting the tappets, fitting a new coil, fuel pump and HT leads on top of the usual oil and filter change.

It is MOTd until September 2016 and comes with a Haynes manual, a few useful spares and a full car cover. Now tax exempt, this smart and original bus is ready for its new owner to enjoy.
