Launched at the 1969 Brussels Motor Show, the Capri instantly became the most desirable model in Ford’s European range and was every thrusting young executive’s dream set of wheels.

With its aggressively long bonnet and swooping rear it looked like it was doing 100mph even when standing still. Conceived as a European alternative to the all-conquering Mustang, it was available in a wide range of engine sizes from a basic 1.3-litre four to a tarmac-ripping 3-litre V6.

Mechanically straightforward, a traditional live axle with leaf springs was deemed sufficient at the rear, while Ford's excellent Macpherson struts at the front and well weighted rack-and-pinion steering gave it a sufficiently sporting feel to justify its sports car looks.

The Capri went through three generations of development, the MkIII appearing in 1978 and continuing until production finally came to an end in December 1986. The last and best model was the limited edition 280 ‘Brooklands’ of which only 1,038 were made. This had the same 160bhp engine and 5-speed gearbox as the 2.8 Injection (good for 130mph) but also had various special features including a limited slip diff, Brooklands Green paintwork, a full leather Recaro sports interior and special 15” alloy wheels.

On offer from a deceased estate, this 280 Brooklands has had three former keepers. Its MOT expires in January 2016 and there are three old MOTs on file along with an original sales brochure. The car has been in the same ownership since 1992 and from what we can make out has covered around 115,000 miles.

Bidders are advised that in 2002 it was the subject of a Category C insurance classification – damaged repairable, the Executor of the estate adding that the owners loved the car very much and that it is being sold with the appropriate registration number 280 BVE. It is offered here at no reserve so the highest bid takes it.
