Launched in 1966 with Alfa’s wonderful twin-cam 1600cc engine, the Pininfarina-styled Giulia Sprint Spider was destined for greatness from the outset, its success being hastened when it shot to fame in the 1967 film ‘The Graduate’ starring Dustin Hoffman.

In 1970 the boat-tail of the original Duetto was replaced with the Series 2 model which had a chopped off ‘Kamm’ tail to improve high speed stability and luggage capacity. More engines were added to the list of options, the most powerful being the 2-litre unit found in the Spider Veloce, giving it a top speed of 119mph and a 0-60mph time of less than 10 seconds.

The Series 3 arrived in 1982, retaining the basic structure of the car but adding more substantial rubber bumpers fore and aft, the rear incorporating a ‘ducktail’ spoiler. Mechanically things remained pretty much as before, sales holding up well in the crucial US market.

This 1984 Series 3 was purchased by the vendor in 2009. Invoices on file show that it received attention to its bodywork by Alfa specialists Highwood Motor Company in Swansea in 2000. A professional motor engineer himself, the vendor has undertaken a comprehensive engine rebuild within the last 18 months, replacing the rings, shells and timing chain and rebuilding the carburettors, the engine now performing really well. More recently a new heater matrix and front brake caliper seals have also been fitted.

With six old MOTs on file, this smart looking example is reported by the vendor to “drive and handle very well”. It is MOTd until November 2016 and is only being offered for sale because the vendor wishes to consolidate his large collection of vehicles into something a bit more manageable.

Please note that an HPI check records this vehicle as subject to a Category D insurance claim in September 1999, 'damaged, repairable'.
