Mercedes launched its W114 and W115 models in 1968, the former with six-cylinder engines and the latter with four-cylinder units.

The first post-war Mercs to feature a completely new chassis not derived from previous models, they were fine handling and ultra-stable machines, at last doing away with the rear low-pivot swing axle that the Stuttgart firm had persisted with for so long. The first production Mercedes to feature fuel injection – a fully electronic Bosch system – they came in a range of engine sizes from 2- to 3-litres.

Available in Saloon and Coupe versions, they were designed by the French maestro Paul Bracq, MB’s chief designer from 1957 to 1967 (widely considered to be the ‘golden age’ of Mercedes design with classic models like the SL Pagoda and the 600 Grosser to his credit), before he left to join BMW in 1970. The Coupe versions were especially handsome, with elegant pillarless side windows, and actually cost less than the saloons although only 67,000 of the 1.9m production were two-door coupes.

Production came to an end in 1976 with a mid-life face-lift in 1973 which included a single front bumper instead of the more expensive to produce double-bumper, a lower bonnet line, lower and broader grille and different headlights.

Dating from January 1972, this double-bumper 250CE Coupe has the 148bhp 2.5-litre six-cylinder single-overhead-cam engine mated to an automatic gearbox which gave it a quoted 0-60 time of 10.2 seconds and a top speed of 118mph. The vendor acquired the car only recently from a family who had apparently owned it for 10 years and was intending to restore the car but his affections have now been stolen by a 280SL Roadster from the same era so the Coupe is now surplus to requirements.

Although the car is said to run and drive well, an online check shows that it was last MOTd and on the road in 2014. The speedo is showing some 110,730 miles and it comes with a service book showing various stamps back to 1982, although the last stamp was in 1997 at just under 95,000 miles.

Now in need of some TLC to restore it to its former glory, this handsome tax exempt Coupe is being offered here at no reserve and, with good examples now fetching well over £10,000 at auction, it should amply reward the remedial works now required. AMENDMENT: Bidders are advised that this vehicle has a fuel leak
