One of the longest-running success stories in motoring history, the iconic Land Rover was designed by Maurice Wilks and launched to the world at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948.

This ‘go anywhere’ marvel was initially only available with a rather restrictive 80-inch wheelbase and 1.6-litre petrol engine, a much more useful 2-litre unit following in 1952. Two years after that, the 80-inch frame was replaced by an 86-inch and 107-inch pick up version, both models sharing a sturdy box-section ladder-frame steel chassis.

The Land Rover range was given its first comprehensive update in 1958, the Series II selling in both SWB (88-inch) and LWB (109-inch) chassis forms, more rounded bodywork and now fitted with the well-tried 72bhp 2.25-litre petrol engine - although early SWB models retained the 2-litre petrol engine from the Series I for the first 1,500 or so vehicles.

In 1961 the Series IIA was introduced with many minor but significant improvements which made it perhaps the most hardy and reliable of all the Series Land Rovers. It was also the best-selling Land Rover of all time, over 50,000 being produced each year until it was replaced by the Series III in 1971.

Dating from June 1969, this particular Series IIA is an unusually well-preserved and original example having had just four owners from new. According to the old style log book, its first owner drove the car until 1981, selling it to another long-term owner who kept it until 2009. The current keeper purchased the car in 2011.

An MOT from 1996 shows that by then it had covered 99,426 miles, a string of subsequent MOTs indicating that a further 5,000 miles have been added to the total, the vendor believing that the combined 105,000 miles is correct. Its current MOT expires in October 2016.

The chassis is original and looks to have had some professional attention in recent years. The vehicle retains the correct ‘elephant hide’ vinyl upholstery to its three front and two rear bench seats and is fitted with a handy tow bar and electrics.

There is nothing quite like a well-shod Series Land Rover in slippery conditions, their light weight, excellent four wheel drive and torquey engine making them particulary effective when the going gets tough. This attractive and well-cared for example is ready for immediate use over the coming winter - which will bring four months of heavy snow if the Daily Express is to be believed...
