Launched in 1982, the Mercedes-Benz 190 was the most affordable model in the marque's history.
Over £600 million was spent researching and developing this car with Mercedes acutely aware that a failure of such an entry level model could easily bring down the rest of the range and the entire company’s reputation.
The 190 was available with airbags, ABS brakes, seatbelt tensioners and other advanced safety features and is now regarded as one of the finest Mercedes-Benz cars ever made. It was finally replaced by the much less impressive C-Class in 1993.
This well presented example comes from the last year of production and has the 113bhp 1.8-litre fuel-injected engine. It has covered 112,000 miles from new in the hands of five owners, showing 11 stamps in the service book taking it through to 58,000 miles, after which a stack of invoices totalling £3,850 confirm its subsequent maintenance history.
Within the last few years it has had a new clutch plate, master and slave cylinders, new starter motor and a replacement propshaft. Last serviced in January of this year, it carries an MOT which expires in July 2016, retains its two sets of keys and comes equipped with a sunroof.
These delightful 'baby Benz’ have developed a cult following of late, their sensible size, comfort, reliability and build quality striking a chord with the canny classic car buyer.
