At its launch in 1998, the Bentley Arnage initially used a twin-turbo version of the BMW 4.4-litre V8 which produced 349bhp and 420lb/ft of torque, sufficient to launch the 2.5 tonne beast to 60mph in just 6.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 160mph.

However, when VW took over the Bentley brand in 1999, the BMW powerplant was replaced (much to the delight of enthusiasts) with the traditional Rolls-Royce 6.75-litre V8 with a single Garrett turbocharger which gave 400bhp and 616lb/ft – making the new Arnage Red Label the fastest and most powerful four-door production car in the world.

But it isn’t the colossal performance that makes the Arnage special; it is the fabulous interior that really impresses anyone lucky enough to get inside. In the words of the Daily Telegraph: “The cabin is the apotheosis of wood-and-leather luxury and it coddles the occupants like no other car. The rear seats are beyond comfortable, they are an occasion. Just sitting in front of the exquisite dashboard and seeing the tiny instrument needles creep past Eric Gill’s locomotive typeface – there isn’t a cheap way into this sort of hedonism, other cars simply don’t have these things.” Or, as Jeremy Clarkson put it: “It’s like Blenheim Palace – on speed.”

Supplied new via Jack Barclay of London in March 2001, this Red Label Arnage has covered 62,034 miles to date in the hands of six owners and comes with a good service history comprising nine stamps to 58,024 miles in August 2011, all but the last at Bentley main agents.

In the current ownership since April 2014, the car also comes with various bills showing subsequent upkeep by Balmoral of Bromsgrove totalling some £4,800, including a 10,000 mile service at 60,966 miles in February this year plus an underbody waxoil treatment and a recharge of the air conditioning system.

Presented in Stellite Silver with a cream hide interior, it is packed with all the luxuries you would expect in a £150,000 car including a built-in satellite navigation system (and operating guide, you may be pleased to hear, plus all its other handbooks in the original wallet). For peace of mind it is also fitted with a Tracker anti-theft system and bidders may be interested to note that as it was registered just before the new road fund licence regime came in, it costs only £230 per year to tax.

With an MOT until February 2016 with no advisories recorded, the car is said to drive beautifully but the vendor advises that it does have a slight misfire from cold on cylinder number A1 which was diagnosed by Balmoral on 30th September 2015 as “head gasket leaking; coolant temperature sensor requires replacing” (report on file). This fault has yet to be rectified and is reflected in the guide price suggested today.

Still a lovely motorcar, it will make the fortunate new owner feel like a millionaire every time they slip behind the wheel.
