The long-awaited full convertible of the Jaguar XJS was finally introduced at the 1988 Geneva Motor Show, some 13 years after the launch of the coupe.
A major feat of re-engineering, it featured a reinforced floorpan, frameless doors and sophisticated electric hood complete with heated glass rear window. Underpinned by the same all round independent coil-sprung suspension and power assisted rack-and-pinion steering as its fixed-head siblings, the soft-top came with anti-lock brakes as standard. Despite the hefty price tag of £40,000 a waiting list was quick to form.
This Solent Blue XJS was sold new by Swain & Jones Jaguar of Farnham in August 1991. It has had five owners in its 24 years to date and has so far covered only 54,500 miles. Always well maintained, it has no fewer than 14 stamps in the service book up to May 2000 at 48,754 miles when it was sold by Chiltern of Bovingdon for £15,750 to an Englishman who lived in France (purchase invoice on file). There is a bill for a 15th service in France in August 2001 at 51,662 miles which cost almost 3,000 Euros, thus giving an average service interval of only 3,600 miles – pretty impressive by any standards.
Mainly kept in storage since then, it’s last MOT expired in July 2014.
