Launched in 1989, the MX-5 was one of those rare cars that became an instant classic the day it was born and has gone on to become the best-selling two-seater sports convertible ever made.
Designed from the outset to deliver a seat-of-the-pants driving experience unencumbered by any unnecessary weight or mechanical complexity, it was a direct descendant of the small roadsters of the 1960s such as the Alfa Spider, MG Midget and Lotus Elan. Nimble, quick and 100% reliable, it won fans right across the globe.
With a steel body and alloy bonnet, it was powered by a 115bhp fuel-injected 1.6-litre engine, mated to a five-speed gearbox, that could propel the little car to 60 in 9.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 120mph. With perfect 50:50 weight distribution and independent double-wishbone suspension all round, it was just as happy taking granny to the shops as it was being hammered round a race track.
In 1998, Mazda released the second-generation MX-5 which was slightly wider and more aerodynamic than the previous model and had conventional open headlamps rather than pop-up units. In 2001 the model received another minor facelift including a more sporting interior with white faced instruments and more supportive seats with taller headrests. Later cars got bigger engines and slightly more power, but they also got heavier and the driving experience became diluted.
Dating from January 1999, this MX-5 Mk2 has covered only 52,000 miles from new in the hands of just two owners, the current having owned it since 2006. Always impeccably maintained, it has no fewer than eight service stamps to date, the first five at Mazda main dealers, and also comes with a VOSA print out and several old MOTs to further warrant the mileage.
Equipment includes 5-speed manual transmission, power steering, CD player, alloy wheels, heated glass rear window in the soft top and a Mazda immobiliser system. Finished in classic red with black cloth seats and carpets, it retains all its original keys.
Said by the vendor to be “in excellent condition throughout with no known faults”, it is also said to drive beautifully with an MOT until October 2016. Being offered here at a fraction of the price of a comparable MGB, this fast and nimble modern classic is guaranteed to put the fun back into driving for the lucky third owner.
