A vitally important model for Porsche at a time when 911 sales were flagging, the 944 was launched in 1982 and proved an immediate sensation, press and public alike being bowled over by the brilliant handling, torquey engines and ‘hewn from solid’ build quality.

Initially it came with just one engine option, a 163bhp 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit that was essentially half of the magnificent V8 from the 928. Over the next few years four more engine options were offered, a 189bhp 2.7-litre 16v, a 220bhp Turbo, a 250bhp Turbo S and a normally aspirated 211bhp 3-litre.

This last engine is considered by many to be the best of the bunch, offering the reliability and fuel economy of the smaller-engined model but nearly as fast as the Turbo (0-60 in 5.9 secs and 150mph) and with bags of low down torque – great for quick getaways at the traffic lights Grand Prix! All three of the high performance models had improved brakes, suspension and aerodynamics that made them sensational driver's cars with fabulous performance, balance and handling – superior to a 911 in many respects.

This 3-litre S2 model is the relatively rare and desirable cabriolet model. According to the build sheets that come with the car, it was built in May 1991 and supplied to its first owner via AFN Guildford in April 1992. Equipment included: Cobalt Blue Metallic paint; Cobalt Blue hood; sports electric seats in blue leather; headlamp washers; protective side mouldings and a Blaupunkt Symphony stereo.

It has covered just under 109,000 miles and comes with a good service history comprising 15 stamps to date, the last at 105,011 miles in July 2009, with evidence of another oil service and a chain tensioner kit in early 2011. The cam belts were last changed at 102,610 miles in November 2006 and a new clutch was fitted at 100,623 miles in July 2005. The interior has also been refurbished at some point and a new black hood fitted. It comes with a large history file including 17 old MOT certificates.

In the current ownership since September 2011, it is said to be in good condition throughout and to drive well with an MOT until April 2016 and is only being sold due to lack of time in which to enjoy it.
