The long running MG Midget started life as an updated version of the Donald Healey inspired Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite.

Growing more comfortable and civilised as the years passed, the final version ended up with the 1491cc engine from the Triumph Spitfire, wind up windows, external door handles, servo brakes and of course the rubber bumpers that so characterised these last of the line Midgets.

Midget by name but far from Midget by nature, it was a nimble performer, eventually disappearing from MG’s line-up in 1980 by which time a colossal 266,000 had been delivered, 20% of these in its final 1500 form.

This very smart 1979 model was purchased by the vendor as a partially dismantled project. The bodyshell had been stripped of its interior, doors and rear axle, all components being carefully boxed up and supplied with the car.

The bodyshell was then further stripped and the front wings removed. New sills were professionally welded in place, along with repairs to the floors, inner wheel arches and front wings.

The car was then thoroughly prepared and given a professional respray, with many hours of hard work going into the preparation. Much of the car was taken back to bare metal and correctly etch-primed, the car being reassembled very carefully to ensure accurate panel gaps.

The engine was sent to a local engineer for a report which is included in the file of documentation. The engine got a clean bill of health, the inspection concluding that it has had a +.020” rebore, crank grind, an unleaded head conversion with new exhaust valves and a new clutch.

The whole restoration process took around six months to complete, the finished result looking very smart, the car passing its MOT in June of this year.

Fun to drive and easy to own, an MG Midget makes for the perfect first classic and this smart yellow example looks very good value at the suggested guide price having had a great deal of hard work and effort lavished on it over the last year.
