When the Ford Fiesta made its debut in 1976, it used a conventional front-wheel-drive layout, becoming Big Blue’s first global success with a front driver.

It was designed in response to the emerging trend for small hatchbacks, Fiat and Renault enjoying notable success with their 127 and 5 models across all European markets. GM were a step ahead of Ford with their Chevette having brought it to market the previous year, Ford taking several years to push the Fiesta to the top of the sales division. It set the path for their future small car range and remained at the top of league until the arrival of the new Metro in 1980 which pushed it into second place.

This nicely preserved MkI chrome-bumper Fiesta was delivered new through RP Ravenhill, Hereford’s main Ford dealer, in February 1981 to a Mrs Lockett who lived on nearby Ayleston Hill. She chose a Diamond White exterior with a Bitter Chocolate interior and drove it just 25,463 miles before putting the car into storage in 2007, the car remaining unused ever since.

Complete with the original handbook and lubrication chart, its service book has three stamps, the first at 5,860 miles in 1985, then at 13,031 miles in 1990 and the last at 18,528 miles in 1995. The vendor has removed some of the plastic trim inside to show the sound condition of the structure, the seats and carpets remaining in excellent condition and showing very little signs of wear as one would expect on a car that has seen so little use.

Recently retrieved from storage and easily got going with a slave battery and fresh fuel added, it is said to run well although will need a new battery and a new set of tyres to replace the perished originals, not to mention a thorough recommissioning.

Entry into the classic car movement doesn’t come much easier than this. Perfect for the younger classic enthusiast, it offers easy and economical ownership combined with zippy performance and fun handling. A first rung on the ladder to the more exclusive reaches of the buoyant classic Ford scene, it is being offered here at no reserve so your paper round money may take it!
