History

Said by the Fire Service Preservation Group to be "a very important vehicle in the history of the British fire service", this is one of only two Dennis F25 fire appliances remaining and is said to be very unusual in being fitted with a Dodge 250ci (4.17-litre) 6-cylinder petrol engine.

Built by Dennis Brothers Ltd of Guildford, it is one of five appliances that were despatched new to the Somerset County Fire Brigade in October 1958. After some 20 years service with the Dulverton and Cheddar Fire Stations, the appliance is then said to have been acquired by a large Birmingham factory to act as fire tender on the premises before passing into private hands and being exhibited at shows in the 1980s.

Copies of the original factory build sheets are contained in the history file as are photographs which show the vehicle being restored in July 2006. Naturally the vehicle is still in good condition today and is said to drive as it should with everything working except the fuel gauge. It is MOT and road tax exempt and costs the current owner just £87 a year to insure.

Small boys among you will be excited to hear that it also comes with all its original fire fighting equipment including bells, flashing blue lights, several axes, period uniforms and helmets. It has recently been used as a hire vehicle for stag nights – with great success as there is apparently nothing that ladies find more appealing than a man in fireman's uniform...
