Long famed as one of the toughest vehicles on the planet, the Toyota Land Cruiser has been in continuous production since 1951, growing bigger and more luxurious with each passing year.

The J40 Series was produced from 1961 until 1984 when it was replaced by the slightly less rustic J70. Offered in a variety of body styles and with a range of petrol and diesel engines, cumulative Land Cruiser sales had topped the 50,000 mark by 1965. Production had to be increased radically to keep up with demand, the 100,000th car appearing in 1968 and just five years later, the 300,000th Land Cruiser had been delivered.

All were immensely rugged vehicles that saw service with military forces the world over and in harsh environments such as coal mines and Australian outback ranches where reliability was paramount. Their reputation was made in this hospitable environment, Toyota testing all of their new developments in central Australia – if they could survive that, they could survive anything!

In fact the Land Cruiser is the only vehicle ever to have had a conflict named after it, the Toyota War of 1987, in which Chadian fighters equipped with 400 Land Cruisers fitted with MILAN anti-tank missiles inflicted a crushing defeat on Libyan forces equipped with 300 tanks and 60 combat aircraft, simply picking the jets off on the ground and running merciless rings around the lumbering tanks, killing one tenth of the Libyan army in just a few weeks.

This fine looking BJ40 four-cylinder diesel was first registered in New Zealand in April 1980. Its last owner acquired it five years ago to use at his holiday retreat where it was garaged and used at weekends. During his ownership, he had the car fully repainted in the correct shade of beige and made sure it was comprehensively rust proofed. He also fitted new upholstery, starter motor, brake master cylinder and rear discs, a new clutch and a new set of ‘high lift’ springs. New tyres have also recently been fitted to the rear and the battery has been replaced.

The car arrived in the UK late last year and comes with the correct NOVA paperwork showing that taxes have been paid along with details of its New Zealand registration history. Bidders are advised that it is the responsibility of the new owner to organise UK registration.

These iconic Japanese workhorses have become extremely popular of late, with good examples being in high demand right across the globe. Especially by gun toting warlords...

AMENDMENT; Since arrival on-site, the engine has developed a fault. We believe it to be an injector problem but have not investigated further and the car cannot be driven.
