History

This Land Rover S2 SWB 109" was bought new by General Sir Francis Davies of Elmley Castle from H Goodall & Son, the main Bedford, Vauxhall and Jaguar agents in Pershore, in May 1966. He presented it to his gamekeeper for use on his estate on Bredon Hill. The current vendor, a retired local garage proprietor, has known the vehicle all its life and states that it was very little used on the estate and was finally put into storage in a small barn in 1980. A stack of hay bales grew up around and over the barn and here the Land Rover remained until 1989 when the current vendor persuaded the General's son, Lt Col Davies, to sell it to him.

At this point the Land Rover had just 8,000 miles on the clock. It was taken out of storage, recommissioned and fitted with a Ramsey electric winch and snatch block for use as a recovery vehicle for the new owner's garage business. For the next five years it acted as a support vehicle to a Thorneycroft heavy recovery vehicle – often dragging cars out of the nearby River Avon! The vendor states that it will winch around 2.5 tons in a straight pull, and double that weight with the snatch block. It is fitted with an alternator, twin batteries and free wheel hubs.

In 1994 the vehicle was more or less retired, along with its owner, and is now showing less than 15,000 miles on the clock which is said to be absolutely genuine. On the occasion of our visit, the petrol engine certainly fired up readily and ran very sweetly indeed. It has all its MOTs back to 1994, is currently MOTd until December 2007 and has recently been fitted with a new set of wheels and tyres. The vendor believes that this would make an ideal tow vehicle for a boat owner or could continue its career as a recovery truck.
